TRACK: Kentridge’s Brown shows off arm

Kentridge High junior Kevin Brown is a bit new to this track thing. Last week during the league meet, however, Brown hardly looked like a relative newcomer to the sport. Brown, who throws the javelin, came into the meet ranked 16th in the event. With the top 10 individuals advancing, the Charger appeared to be on paper to be a long shot. That long shot, however, uncorked one of the meet’s biggest gems.

TRACK: Kentlake’s Hall movin’ on up

For more than a year, Kentlake high jumper Shad Hall was stuck on a personal best of 5-feet-10 inches. That all changed for Hall two weeks ago, when the Kentlake junior uncorked a mark of 6-feet even against Auburn in the final dual meet of the season.

TRACK: Kent-Meridian’s Harris in the zone

Brandon Harris sat out Kent-Meridian’s final dual meet of the season to rest some aches and pains. The rest apparently did Harris some good. The Kent-Meridian junior uncorked the best mark in the long jump (22-08.25) and the second best mark in the triple jump (45-08.50) during last week’s meet.

NW Kidney Centers’ Asian-Pacific Islander kidney fair is May 22 in Kent

Northwest Kidney Centers on May 22 will conduct a free Asian-Pacific Islander Kidney Health Fair, featuring free blood-pressure checks, entertainment, and the chance to ask questions of a kidney expert. This first-time event runs from noon to 4 p.m. at Great Wall Shopping Mall, 18230 E. Valley Highway, in Kent.

Kent man drowns in Lake Tapps

A 31-year-old Kent man drowned May 15 in Lake Tapps. Peter Talaga was recovered by divers from East County Pierce Fire and Rescue and the Pierce County Sheriff's Office about 40 minutes after he was last seen, according to the Bonney Lake Courier-Herald.

Defense powers Kent Predators to Indoor Football League win against Fairbanks

The defense scored three touchdowns to help lead the Kent Predators to a 42-26 win over the Fairbanks Grizzlies in a professional Indoor Football League game May 14 at the ShoWare Center.

BASEBALL: Power bats lift Kentwood to Class 4A state berth

The Kentwood High baseball team didn’t wait Saturday afternoon to clinch a state berth. Behind home runs by Zach Corpuz and Avery Kain along with a steady performance on the mound by ace Austin Voth, Kentwood knocked off Olympia 7-3 at Heritage Park in Puyallup to claim its sixth Class 4A state berth in seven years.

Kent School District’s VisFest set for May 25

VisFest, the Kent School District's annual film festival, will run from 6-9 p.m. May 25 at Kent-Meridian High School, 10020 S.E. 256th St.

Goodwill and Grocery Outlet of Kent were hit by vandals who left graffiti on top of the storefronts May 12.  Vandals painted graffiti all over Carriage Square and East Hill Shopping centers in the late-night incident.

Vandals strike Kent East Hill shopping complexes

A vandal or vandals spray painted graffiti on the walls of several businesses May 11 or 12 at shopping centers on the East Hill of Kent. The incident occurred overnight between May 11 and May 12 at the Carriage Square and East Hill shopping complexes in the 10200 block of Southeast 258th Street, said Kent Police Sgt. Pat Lowery.

Bozeman hires Kent Police captain as police chief

Kent Police Capt. Ron Price was announced Friday as the new chief of police in Bozeman, Mont. Kent Police Chief Steve Strachan announced the hiring of Price by the city of Bozeman in a media release Friday.

Washington State Patrol plans to fully enforce new cell phone law starting June 10

The Washington State Patrol announced May 14 that it will not offer a grace period to drivers when texting while driving and failure to use a hands-free device become primary traffic offenses on June 10.

FASTPITCH: Crowley, Kentlake gun down Puyallup for South Puget Sound League title

First came the jam, and then came the throw. Behind a pitching gem by Nikole Weber and the defensive play of the year by center fielder Erin Crowley, Kentlake hung on to beat Puyallup 3-1 for the South Puget Sound League title on Friday evening at Service Club Ballfields in Kent.
