Legislators wantonly spending dollars

I believe I heard/saw the Democratic legislators and Governor Gregoire tell us they had "cut" the budget as much as possible, sparing the "vulnerable" among us, before raising $800,000,000 in new taxes. I also heard from the governor that we are in a fiscal crisis.

Republicans love their tea parties

Republicans, it seems, are in love with the tea party concept. So soon after the tea party they threw in Iraq, they are proposing another right here in America.

Disneyland trip cured him of ever wanting to return

Earlier this morning, while I was having my third cup of coffee, I read your column ("Please, God, don’t make me go back to Disneyland") in today’s edition of the Kent Reporter (April 16.) And, a while ago, I got to thinking of the last (in fact, the only) time that I ever visited Disneyland. And, that was a while ago too — more like 49 years ago (probably before you were even born). I was much younger, and had more hair in those days. Anyway, after that one trip, I was cured — of any desire to ever return.

Spotlight on Inclusion a Kent schools success

BASEBALL: Kentlake’s season comes to end with loss to Jefferson

The pitching was there for the Kentlake High baseball team this past weekend. A lack of timely hitting, however, bit the Falcons once again. Right-handed ace Doug Christie served up a gem on Friday night, dominating Curtis 4-2 in the opening round of the South Puget Sound League tournament, but the Falcons weren't able to continue the momentum as they were eliminated by Jefferson on Saturday, 3-2.

BASEBALL: Kentwood falls to Puyallup, takes No. 2 seed to district tournament

It’s not yet panic time for the Kentwood High baseball team. But after Saturday’s 10-6 loss to Puyallup in the South Puget Sound League championship game, there is some head scratching going around. Despite home runs from Austin Voth, Taylor White and Bryant VanEngelenburg, the sixth-ranked Conquerors were unable to overcome a fast start by the No. 1 Vikings.

ZHITAYA GARRETT Kent-Meridian Grade: Senior. Sport: Track. Accomplishment: Garrett ran the lead-off leg of Kent-Meridian's sprint medley relay team and also anchored the Royals' 4 x 100 relay team at this past weekend's Oregon Relays in Eugene.

STEFAN BANGSUND Kentwood Grade: Sophomore. Sport: Soccer. Accomplishment: Bangsund, a midfielder, turned up the offense, netting a pair of goals in a 2-0 victory over Auburn last week. Favorite class: Social Studies.

PREPS OF THE WEEK, May 7: Nikki Skinner, Kentwood

NIKKI SKINNER Kentwood Grade: Senior. Sport: Tennis. Accomplishment: Skinner, playing No. 2 singles, helped the Conquerors wrap up the SPSL North by knocking off Kentridge's Vicky Tran 6-1, 6-1 en route to a 3-2 team victory. The win helped Kentwood improve to 8-0 in league competition.

Kent Police help save man’s life

The rapid response of two Kent Police officers and their use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) helped save the life of a 52-year-old Kent man Sunday afternoon.
