Kent Toys for Joy program collects gifts for more than 2,000 needy children

Kent firefighters collected more than 5,000 gifts for more than 2,000 children during the 2009 Toys for Joy program. The final numbers were released Dec. 30 by the Kent Fire Department. The toys were delivered Dec. 22 to the Kent Food Bank to be distributed to families.

Tacoma man steals truck, calls 911 when he runs out of gas near Kent

The Washington State Patrol arrested a 19-year-old Tacoma man for investigation of auto theft after he reportedly stole a truck and then called 911 after the vehicle stalled Dec. 29 along Highway 167 near Kent.

Power outage strikes Kent, Covington

Nearly 1,900 Puget Sound Energy customers on Kent’s East Hill and in Covington were without power for about two hours early Tuesday morning, Dec. 29.

Professional races will compete on motorcycles as well as all-terrain vehicles at the World Championship Ice Racing Series Dec. 11 at the ShoWare Center.

World Championship Ice Racing Series at Kent’s ShoWare Center

Professional racers competed on motorcycles and four-wheel all-terrain vehicles around an oval track on the ice Dec. 18 at the Kent ShoWare Center, going from 0 to 60 mph in fewer than three seconds. Kent was one of 15 stops in the 2009-2010 World Championship Ice Racing Series.

Animal adoptions up at Kent Animal Shelter

Pet adoptions at the King County Animal Shelter in Kent are up 10 percent over this time last year, and the shelter population is down by more than one-third.
