An Amazon Fresh grocery store is opening in Federal Way at The Commons.
“I can confirm Amazon will open an Amazon Fresh grocery store in Federal Way,” an Amazon spokesperson wrote in a Jan. 3 email to the Federal Way Mirror newspaper.
Once the home to a former Sears store, the red brick building at 1701 S. Commons has been under renovation for over a year. Amazon Fresh signage in the brand’s signature white and green color palette now hangs outside the building, anchoring the west side of The Commons mall.
The spokesperson said they do not have details to share about an opening date. The building is 38,179 square feet, according to the mall’s property and site map.
Amazon Fresh stores have traditional checkouts and the Federal Way location will also have “Just Walk Out” technology, allowing customers to skip the checkout line, said an Amazon spokesperson via email.
The technology company’s brick-and-mortar grocery stores sell produce, meat and seafood, in addition to prepared foods made in store daily. Amazon Fresh stores accept debit and credit cards, cash and SNAP/EBT benefits, according to their website. The company’s website says Amazon Fresh stores also allow customers free in-store pickups and returns for Amazon online purchases.
Amazon did not answer when questioned if the Federal Way location includes a distribution center.
In Washington, there is an Amazon Fresh store in Bellevue and two locations in Seattle. Amazon Fresh started in Seattle in 2007. In 2017, the e-commerce giant purchased Whole Foods for over $13 billion in cash.
At the Amazon Fresh store in Seattle’s Central District, starting pay is offered at $17 an hour, according to a previous Washington store opening announcement by Amazon.
