After 43 years of business in Federal Way, the Macy’s department store at the Commons mall will be closing this year.
The Federal Way store is one of 30 location closures recently announced by the company that will be implemented by the end of Macy’s first quarter, ending April 30. In February 2020, Macy’s announced plans to cut 2,000 jobs by closing about 125 locations over the next three years, according to USA Today. Last year, Macy’s closed approximately 30 stores as part of the plan.
“After careful consideration, Macy’s has decided to close our Commons at Federal Way location,” said Emily Workman, director of media relations for Macy’s.
Macy’s shared this information with employees, and regular, non-seasonal colleagues who are unable to be placed at nearby Macy’s store will be eligible for severance, including outplacement resources, Workman said.
A clearance sale began this month and will run for approximately 8-12 weeks, Workman said. Workman could not provide a specific date of closing, but based on the sale timeline and information from various sources, the Federal Way location could close by the end of March.
“The decision to close a store is always a difficult one, but Macy’s Commons at Federal Way is honored to have served our customers and the community over the past 43 years,” Workman said.
Local residents may continue to shop at Macy’s Puyallup South Hill, Macy’s Southcenter and Macy’s Tacoma locations, as well as online at macys.com or on the Macy’s app.
