Sidney Rice is going from the Seahawks to chickens with plans to open a Wingstop restaurant this fall at Kent Station.

Rice, 27, announced his retirement this week as a receiver for the Seattle Seahawks just prior to the start of training camp. Rice plans to focus on his ownership of five Wingstop franchises in the Puget Sound area, including one scheduled to open in October at Kent Station.

Wingstop is a Texas-based national restaurant chain featuring classic and boneless chicken wings. The wing menu includes flavors such as Original Hot, Atomic, Hawaiian, Garlic Parmesan, and Louisiana Rub.

“We are really excited about Wingstop coming to Kent Station,” said John Hinds, general manager for the shopping center. “A couple of Sydney Rice backed Wingstops have already opened in the Puget Sound area and the Kent Station location is soon to follow. We anticipate an October opening date.”

Kent Station announced in early 2014 that a Wingstop would be coming to town. Hinds said the restaurant is in the process of internal design review with the next steps to submit plans to the city of Kent for a permit.

Wingstop will be at the corner of West Smith Street and Ramsay Way, next to Reds Wine Bar and BECU. The space is 1,579 square feet.

“We expect Sydney Rice will be at the grand opening although those details have not been worked out as of yet,” Hinds said.

Wingstop locations in Washington include Tacoma, Tukwila, Bellevue, Spokane, Pasco and Richland. A Renton location is on the list for opening soon.
