Dangerous fireworks make us prisoners in our own home

I just looked at the last page of the Kent Reporter: "Have a happy and enjoyable Fourth!" Living here for over 20 years, that has never happened.

My only rationalization of allowing such dangerous fireworks, which the city cares nothing about, must be related to those who profit.

Kent Police are called every year by my neighbors and I, who see small kids lighting firecrackers, other small kids watching in awe as spinners chase kids down the street, then the horrid evening of illegal M-80s. There are fireworks obtained illegally from a reservation, risks of fire and death during a dry season and the part that makes me cry … the human beings suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder from serving our country in war and other events. And so important to our family is the fear and trauma inflicted on our dogs/cats/birds (and strays) who are terrified by what I can only describe as egotistical and horrible.

I served my country proudly in the USAF, yet my family is a prisoner in our own home on July 4. I would never leave my babies home alone while it sounds like war outside my front door. I would love to see a “professional fireworks” display in honor of our nation, but not in Kent. There’s money to be made – I’m sure by many – and I will not stop this fight.
