I agree with the letter written by Pat Walsh, (April 15 edition). While it’s great to see Allied Waste encouraging better recycling habits, they do need to change their pickup plan. As per my neighborhood rules, all cans must be kept in our garage. While I can live with now having three containers, I can’t comfortably live with my organic waste receptacle only being picked up every other week. Food and plant material rot over time, odor increases which can encourage rodents to explore. Last thing I need are rats and mice invading my garage!
In short, it just makes more sense to reverse the schedule. Pick up the waste receptacle, which mostly has dry products, every other week and the organics once a week. If this is done, more people will buy in to the recycling plan. The other option would be to pick up both the waste and organic cans weekly although that could increase our rates which none of us would appreciate. I’d guess many folks put food in their organic waste can only during the week it’s picked up for reasons mentioned above. Sorry, I just can’t have left over fish in my garage for two weeks.
Today is an appropriate day to send off this e-mail as today is “Earth Day”. We all need to do our share including city of Kent taking another look at their new plan for garbage pickup. I too applaud Kent via Allied Waste for taking this step. Hopefully they will take another look at what is picked up when. Let’s all do our part to help this fragile planet we live on. With a few tweaks here and there we can.
