Political signs bring up questions, concerns

Everyone hates political signs. But they are important for name recognition. This year someone has been stealing signs from both parties, even from private property.

Everyone hates political signs. But they are important for name recognition. This year someone has been stealing signs from both parties, even from private property.

There must be hundreds of signs in some backyard or garage. A neighbor knows this and is saying nothing. Why would people risk jail and a fine for this childish activity? Stealing or even taking down signs is a violation of the law punishable separately for each sign taken. Trespassing on private property to commit a crime is another crime.

All cities in the area prohibit nailing campaign signs to city street and traffic sign posts. Yet supporters of Sullivan and Simpson do this every year. You can see these throughout Kent, Auburn and Renton. The signs in the ground next to the city signs are OK. Should we re-elect people with such flagrant disregard for the local laws?

Finally, state regulations specify what must or must not be on political signs. “Elect” may appear on any sign but “Re-Elect” only on signs for incumbent candidates. Pat Sullivan’s new signs read “Elect.” A mistake? His 2006 and 2008 signs carried “Re-Elect.” With many voters inclined toward removing the incumbents this year, was this REALLY unintended or is it a subtle deception?
