Your “letters” writers posited a strong belief that the solution to a rash of shootings is more gun control.
Let me give you three reasons why that won’t work: Chicago, New York, and Washington D.C.
Those cities have the strictest forms of gun control nationwide, yet they showcase the greatest amount of gun violence. The reason for this paradox is the identical reason why we see mass school shootings. It’s the broken culture behind the guns. It’s a society that decries family values and subsidizes policies detrimental to familial structure.
We want to blame it on the guns – they’re an easy target. We want to blame it on an institution (NRA) that just like other lobby-based institutions donates money to political causes. Yet we don’t want to go after the birthplace of the violence: A nation of youth neglected by a dwindling family structure. Families are being not-so-gradually replaced be an entertainment industry, the Hollywood elite.
The entertainment industry is the birthplace of violence courtesy of their horribly savage video games, movies, and music that honors drugs, isolation and bloodshed. This industry preys upon the minds of neglected wannabe teens inducing both despair and carnage. It is nothing short of hypocritical that the Hollywood elite are allowed to come out against sex and gun violence but then profit from it through their product.
Big Entertainment funnels contributions to politicians that claim to decry violence. But taking political money from the Hollywood elite is a blatant double standard. We as people need hold politicians accountable for taking money from these purveyors of violence.
Tightening-down on gun eligibility is a good thing. We can all agree on that, the NRA included. But until we set a national course to eradicate violent entertainment, rebuild the family institution, mandatorily commit dangerous people, and incarcerate the incorrigible, then societal violence will continue –despite any flurry of legislation to confiscate guns from law-abiding citizens.
