Yesterday morning my wife came into our bedroom and tossed a two-way radio next to me and then left for her morning “power walk.” The disturbance to my slumber was slight and I soon began to drift off into a state of semi-dozing. As my mind began to desert from reality, suddenly I was jolted from my slumbering daze by a tough yet feminine voice: “BAMBI!”
“Sending two your way.”
“Copy that, Sabrina!”
These were voices speaking with crisp and clear tones – not of my wife, but instead road-crew traffic diverters doing their live talk-radio show from 152nd off of Kent-Kangley right into my two-way radio laying beside me in bed at 8 a.m.
“Sending one at you!”
“Copy that.”
“Hold the traffic, there’s a squirrel crossing the road.”
“Copy that!”
“Here comes another car.”
“Copy that.”
“Hold traffic – two city trucks coming your way.”
“Copy that.”
“Bear is trying to get your attention. He’s picked up one of the orange road cones and using it as a megaphone.”
“Yeah, that guy is cool. He’s like a kid inside…he’s a story-teller. Sending two cars your way.”
“Copy that.”
Needless to say, I was the silent-yet-entertained audience to this lively volley of effortless, joyful and precise directions from two of Kent’s hardworking road-crew workers. It was a great way to wake up, better than an alarm clock.
Hats off and a hearty clap of appreciation to Sabrina and Bambi for delivering a great on the job performance.
“Copy that!”
