We’re all family as we tackle problems

I am writing as a parent of a graduate of Kent-Meridian High School.

Kent iGrad principal Carol Cleveland’s frank assessment of the problems with student behavior found in many of the Kent schools is welcomed and should not be ignored (“iGrad principal encourages community input to help quell fighting and bullying”, Kent Reporter, May 30).

I would like to note that I believe that there is too much organized emphasis on diversity in the Kent School District. In Greek mythology, the titan Prometheus defies the gods and risks human tragedy by giving fire to humanity. Ms. Cleveland’s firsthand accounts of bad student behaviors suggest the majority of the students aren’t mature enough or know how to process diversity information. The unintended result is that many students are learning how to be prejudice; my son included.

It is no wonder bullying and fighting are rampart in the school buildings.

Celebrating diversity is wrong-headed and divisive and the school district is only accelerating entrenched social problems that already persist.

The solution should not be the development of another program. The solution should be an overarching message to the students that we are all family here and that we are all in this together.
