Who’s funding negative mailed-in advertising? It’s a shell game

Every year just before the election our mail brings us negative ads targeting the Republican candidates. The accusations are usually false or really twisted from the truth, designed to make the candidates look bad and put an element of doubt in the minds of the voters who they think are too stupid to know it is false.

Every year just before the election our mail brings us negative ads targeting the Republican candidates. The accusations are usually false or really twisted from the truth, designed to make the candidates look bad and put an element of doubt in the minds of the voters who they think are too stupid to know it is false.

This year the source of the first round of the ads come from the Political Action Committees (PACs) Independence PAC, Families PAC and Together PAC. All have the same Auburn address. State campaign advertising law requires ads to reveal the top five contributors. Each of these PACs show the top and only contributor is another PAC such as Succeed PAC, Unity PAC, and Basic PAC. This is a clever shell game used to hide the identity of the real contributors.

It is possible to follow these different PACs through the public disclosure reports and they eventually lead to yet another PAC and eventually all lead to unions and special interest groups such as NARAL, Planned Parenthood and the Roosevelt Fund which itself is an arm of the Democratic Legislative Committee. Most of the PACs are operated by Moxie Media, a Democratic political campaign consulting firm in Seattle.

This deceptive funding shell game and the false negative attack ads should motivate every voter to vote for the candidates who are the targets of the ads. Currently they are Mark Hargrove and Joe Fain. Candidate Rodrigo Yanez has not yet been targeted.
