Kentridge High’s Jazz Bands and guests

People of all ages can swing dance and listen to the sounds of Kentridge High’s Jazz Bands and special guest, the KR Vocal Jazz Ensemble, on Friday night at the school cafeteria, 12430 SE 208th St., Kent.

Conceived by the Kentridge band director, Brian Akesson, the Big Band era music is a passion of his and a chance for the high school’s jazz groups to have a real-life experience of performing in a dance setting.

In its third year, the popular swing dance offers something that is not being offered to the south end community. For this reason, Akesson decided to jump on the opportunity to offer this step back in time experience.

The evening starts at 7 with free swing dance lessons by Dance It. The joint partnership allows the community to go back in time and learn some of the famous dance steps that only seem possible for those with “dance know how.”

Dance It has been passionate about bringing social dance back into local schools and has worked with the Lake Washington and Shorewood high schools, to mention a few, in after-school club settings to make this possible.

Akesson and guest director, Catherine Robinson (KR Vocal Jazz Ensemle), are joining together for the first time to offer a variety of favorites from the likes of Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Count Basie. It’s old-time swing with a splash of holiday flare.

There will be refreshments.

Proceeds from a silent auction during the dance benefits the Kentridge jazz program.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students/seniors/military.

Tickets are available by contacting a jazz student or by emailing: KR_Wilson@comcast.net
