For the Reporter

The Suffers – Houston’s award-winning 10-piece ensemble – open the free Kent Summer Concert Series on Thursday, July 9.

The band performs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Lake Meridian Park, 14800 SE 272nd St. (shuttle bus service available).

The Suffers are redefining the sound of Gulf Coast soul, intertwining elements of classic American soul with rock and roll. They kicked off their American tour, a 40-plus city run that began in May and stretches to October.

The Suffers recently made their national television debut on the “Late Show With David Letterman”, playing “Gwan,” which originally released off of their new Make Some Room EP in January.

Established in 2011, The Suffers’ lineup was curated by bassist Adam Castaneda and vocalist/keyboardist Pat Kelly, who brought on trumpet player Jon Durbin, trombonist Michael Razo, guitarist Kevin Bernier, percussionist Jose “Chapy” Luna, and drummer/vocalist Nick Zamora. Jazz saxophonist Cory Wilson and guitarist/vocalist Alex Zamora filled out the rhythm section, while front-woman Kam Franklin topped off the group with soaring vocals.

In a short time, the band has progressed from packing Houston venues to accepting invitations for featured performances at Hangout Music Festival 2015, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience 2014, SXSW 2015, Dallas’ Index and Homegrown Festivals, Houston’s Free Press Summer Festival, Untapped Festival, and CMJ Music Marathon 2014.

The Suffers have since joined the ranks of Red Bull Sound Select and have remained a local favorite, accepting 11 Houston Press Music Awards in three years.
