2-year-old child, woman rescued from Auburn house fire

Fire started in the garage around 11:40 p.m. Jan. 20 near the 30100 block of 50th Lane S.

A woman and a 2-year-old child were rescued by firefighters Wednesday night, Jan.20 after a garage fire spread throughout an Auburn home.

Around 11:40 p.m. near the 30100 block of 50th Lane S., crews from South King Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a possible fire at a townhome, said Capt. Brad Chaney of South King Fire and Rescue.

While crews were en route, they learned a young woman and a 2-year-old child were trapped inside the home.

Engine 365 arrived to find a fully-involved garage fire quickly spreading to the rest of the home, Chaney said. The crew began making an aggressive attack on the fire to buy time for the occupants trapped inside and started searching the residents.

Crews from Ladder Truck 364 arrived and conducted a 360-degree walk around the structure, during which they discovered on the back side of the home, the mother was hanging out of the window with smoke billowing out from around her, Chaney said.

The child was safely in someone’s arms outside of the structure below the window, however it is not clear how the child was removed from the building.

Crews safely rescued the young woman who was hanging out the window, and both she and the child were treated for smoke inhalation.

“Crews continued to fight the fire and state that the heat was intense,” Chaney said. “The initial interior attack crew of E365 said at one point they got pushed to the floor by the intense heat and steam from their hose stream as they hit the seat of the fire.”

Once the fire was out, an additional search revealed no other occupants inside and no further injuries reported.

The cause is under investigation in partnership with King County fire investigators.
