A 21-year-old Edmonds woman died while riding in a vehicle driven by her 20-year-old boyfriend that crashed into a Kent telephone pole.

The woman was identified Monday as Charissa Judkins by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The accident occurred at about 1:35 a.m. Sunday in the 24800 block of 148th Avenue Southeast, according to a Kent Police media release.

The driver, of Covington, suffered serious injuries. Paramedics transported him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he remained Sunday in critical condition. The woman died at the scene of the accident.

An initial investigation by police showed the man, driving his girlfriend’s vehicle southbound on 148th Avenue Southeast with the woman in the front passenger seat, lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle then careened across the roadway and on to the opposite shoulder where it smashed into a telephone pole at the front passenger door.

Speed and possible driver impairment were contributing factors to the accident, according to police.

“As a community, we need to continue to stress the responsibilities of operating a motor vehicle to all drivers on the roadway,” said Kent Police Sgt. Robert Constant. “This was yet another tragedy that most likely could have been avoided.”

The crash remains under investigation.
