For the Reporter
It’s a visual arts contest, an opportunity for young artists in Kent and South King County to express their Latino spirit, earn awards and work with nationally recognized Peruvian artist Blanca Santander.
The event calls for high school student artists to create and submit an individual piece expressing and showcasing “The Resilient Latino Spirit” by an April 15 deadline. An application form is available at www.svdpseattle.org/LatinoSpirit.
St. Vincent de Paul of Seattle | King County’s Centro Rendu – in collaboration with Highline Community College – presents the visual arts contest.
Illustration, watercolor, acrylic or oil painting on paper or canvas – a maximum size of 2-by-3 feet – are acceptable media for the art project.
Students can submit their art to either Centro Rendu, Kent’s Latino Educational and Resource Center, at 310 Central Ave. N., inside the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift shop. Kent School District students can submit their works to the designated contact person at their school.
Blanca Santander will judge the individual pieces, with the top 12 pieces to be displayed around the City of Kent.
The top three winners will receive a gift certificate to one of the art supply stores in the area.
Mayor Suzette Cooke will present the awards. Those students will have a chance to participate with Santander in the creation of an outdoor public art mural that will be displayed on the south wall of the St. Vincent de Paul Community Store – at the corner of Central and Smith – for future generations to enjoy.

The project is funded in part by a grant from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development for a project that involves creating a mural to support community engagement through the arts and in collaboration with Highline Community College.
