This week I am going to dedicate this space to a married couple. A happily married couple. And that is worth noting, and remembering.
For the past couple of years I have played in a sextet with Rob Reynolds. Rob is the best jazz sax man I have ever had the opportunity to work with in a band.
Saturday, Rob’s wife Marge Reynolds died, leaving her sax man. Their 53rd wedding anniversary was Monday.
Our band’s signature song was “A Sunday Kind of Love.”
Rob always introduced the song by telling the audience that for many years he played Saturday night gigs, as a touring band musician. It is a world I understand.
Rob said when he married Marge he wanted a love that would last past Saturday night, and become a Sunday kind of love.
They found it.
No one ever has, nor ever will blow the sax in that song like Rob. Every time I heard him play it the notes become more than music. I always stopped playing and listened. There is nothing like Rob’s sad sax talking.
Our band has been asked to play at Marge’s memorial.
I hope for a few moments I can find that place where Rob goes to play that tune.
I know that any kind of love is hard to find and harder to hold, but every time I heard Rob blow his sax playing that song, I knew he and Marge were in that secret place.
“I want a Sunday kind of love,
A love to last past Saturday night,
I’d like to know it’s more than love at first sight.
I want a Sunday kind of love.”
To all who hope to be married, or are married and need to find the spark again, try listening to “A Sunday Kind of Love” and imagine Rob’s sad sax talking to Marge.
