Jim Berrios announces last fall that he’s running to be the next Kent mayor.

Jim Berrios will have a campaign kickoff for Kent mayor from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, at the Golden Steer Steak n’ Rib House on the East Hill.

Berrios, a Kent City Council member, announced last year that he would run for mayor. Councilwoman Dana Ralph also is running for mayor. Suzette Cooke decided not to seek a fourth, four-year term as mayor. Her terms ends Dec. 31.

The kickoff for Berrios will feature saxophonist Darren Motamedy. Berrios, whose council terms ends this year, owns the Golden Steer restaurant, 23826 104th Ave. SE.

Berrios asks that people planning to attend the campaign kickoff should RSVP to joshsdad@comcast.net or call 253-350-1811.

Kent’s mayor is a full-time position and pays $144,996 per year. Council members are part-time positions and pay $14,808 per year.

Candidates for mayor and council must file May 15-19 with King County Elections. If more than two candidates file for a position, they will be on the Aug. 1 primary ballot. The two candidates with the most votes advance to the Nov. 7 general election.
