Morning breakfast turned into a small kitchen fire Wednesday on Kent’s West Hill.
Unattended grease heating on the stovetop caught fire at about 7:30 a.m. in the 2200 block of South 250th Street, according to a Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority media release. Residents of the home were alerted by the smoke detector that there was danger. Unable to subdue the fire, the residents made it outside to safety.
Although the kitchen will need major repairs, the house is still livable. Due to the swift response, the damage was limited to the kitchen. The five residents, and their dog Cinnamon, were not displaced.
South King Fire and Rescue and Kent Regional Fire Authority units responded to the fire.
The fire was ruled accidental due to unattended cooking. There were no injuries to residents or firefighters. The estimated damage amount is about $12,000.
