Kent teachers will protest what their union leadership is calling “the false choice district administrators are presenting to School Board members” regarding the Kent School District budget.
The gathering is scheduled for 6:20-6:55 p.m. at the Kent School District administration building, 12033 S.E. 256 St.
The protest is timed to take place shortly before the 7 p.m. meeting.
The School Board is scheduled tonight to take action on some hard choices – how to shore up what at this time appears to be a $9 million hole in next year’s school budget, according to district officials.
The Kent Education Association, which is the teachers’ union, is claiming the district is “looking for a strategy to shift the deepest cuts onto school teachers and impoverished parents while the district continues to sit on its well-padded $22 million savings account.”
Kent school finance officials claim otherwise, stating it is irresponsible to dig into district savings for one-time fixes, to fund programs that will need a continued source of funding.
