The city of Kent posted on its website an invitation to companies to bid to remove approximately 19,900 giant sandbags along the Green River Trail.
Companies must submit bids by May 29.
The King County Flood Control District’s Board of Supervisors approved Monday a $5.8 million plan to remove 26 miles of sandbags lining the river in Kent, Auburn and Tukwila. The cost in Kent is expected to be about $1.6 million.
The city will award the contract to the lowest bidder with work scheduled to start in late June or early July, according to city officials.
Contractors have the option to submit bids based on hauling material offsite to an approved location of its choosing or to haul the fill materials to a city-owned site along Naden Avenue between Willis Street and Meeker Street.
Companies must also repair any damage to the levee or trail under the giant sandbags that sat for three years along the levee as extra protection for flooding while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers repaired a damaged abutment next to the Howard Hanson Dam on the upper Green River. The Corps completed repairs in the fall.
