Cobalt Mortgage branches raise $4,000 in scholarships for Kent-area students | School briefs

Cobalt Mortgage Dollars for Scholars, a nonprofit organization, joined donors, business partners and employees to create scholarships to support students in the pursuit of their post-secondary education goals.

Cobalt Mortgage Dollars for Scholars, a nonprofit organization, joined donors, business partners and employees to create scholarships to support students in the pursuit of their post-secondary education goals.

This year more than $100,000 in scholarship funds will be awarded to 73 deserving students in Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, Utah, and Oklahoma.

The Issaquah and Kirkland branches of Cobalt Mortgage will award $5,000 in scholarships to high school seniors of local schools and community organizations:

• Jeff and Megan Bell Scholarship Award ($2,000) – Kentridge High School
• Tina McDonough Remax/Kevin Winter Scholarship Award ($2,000) – Tahoma High School
• Edgeview Homes Scholarship Award ($1,000) – Auburn High School

Individual donors and business partners contributed nearly $45,000 in scholarship funds that were matched dollar-for-dollar by Cobalt Mortgage. The remainder of the scholarships was funded by employee donations and company contributions. The purpose of the company’s nonprofit initiative is to make a positive impact on the youth and their families in the communities they serve.

Child Find screenings

The Kent School District offers free Child Find screenings for children ages 3-5 who may have a disability.

Screenings will be in the areas of language, learning and motor development.

All screenings will be at the KSD Administrative Campus, 12033 S.E. 356th St.

Screening dates: March 22, 29; April 5, 26.

At least one parent must accompany the child at the screening. Screenings take approximately 1 1/2 hours and are conducted by certified staff.

Navid Azodi of Kentwood has been accepted into Phase One of the 2012-13 Washington Aerospace Scholars. The WAS program, now in its seventh year, is a free, competitive, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education program for high school juniors from throughout the state and is affiliated with NASA Johnson Space Center’s National High School Aerospace Scholars program and with the University of Washington’s Department of Earth and Space Science. … Kent’s Matthew Jordan Swanson made the fall honor roll at Western Oregon University. …

Kent-Meridian’s school store is one of three school-based enterprises in the nation to receive a Silver Level Certification. The school store has operated for 41 years and is run by its student DECA group. Three students – Emma Baron, Charlene Ramel and Brandon Vansylalom – and their advisor, Angela Taylor, worked on the certification project. Schools stores are nationally certified on the Bronze, Silver or Gold levels based on their demonstration of marketing and retail standards.
