Forecasters predict prolonged cold weather over the next week in Kent and the Puget Sound region that people need to prepare for.
Beginning New Year’s Eve, there is a possibility of snow flurries on local hills as low as 300 feet. While the snow will not last, it may stick around into the first day of 2017, making travel more difficult.
The biggest problem is for the rest of the week, when temperatures top out in the low 30s and can get into the teens at night. According to some weather forecasters, this cold spell may also lead to more snow the following week.
While how much snow we get is still unclear, the exceptionally cold weather is not.
The Kent Regional Fire Authority offers the following tips to combat cold temperatures:
• Insulate all exposed pipes in and around your home – especially outdoor water faucets. Also think about any pipes in attics or crawlspaces.
• Keep vehicle fuel tanks full.
• Have tire chains and know how to install them.
• Always check travel conditions before leaving home – especially if driving over mountain passes.
• Stock up on necessary items in case you cannot get out, including: meds, diapers, and baby food.
• Check on the elderly.
• Be ready for power outages and have flashlights with extra batteries.
• Dress in layers to preserve body heat when outdoors.
• Keep pets inside.
• Have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
• Never bring barbecues or gas generators into or too close to homes.
