For the Reporter

Communities In Schools of Kent host its annual fundraising event, Breakfast For The Kids, on May 22 from 7:30 to 9 in the Kent Phoenix Academy gymnasium, 11000 SE 264th St., Kent

Proceeds benefit CISK’s continuing services in the Kent School District.

Last year’s breakfast raised more than $24,000 for CISK, a nonprofit agency dedicated to empowering students to achieve in school and succeed in life.

“Communities In Schools is data driven and evidence based,” said David de la Fuente, CISK executive director. “We partner with the Kent School District to raise the graduation rate by placing a dedicated staff person directly in the schools, so that we can understand student needs and easily access community resources for students and their families.”

Kent Schools Superintendent Edward Lee Vargas is guest speaker. Other speakers include Sen. Joe Fain (R-Auburn, District 47).

The Windermere Foundation, Umpqua Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Omaha Woodmen Life Insurance Society Chapter 35, Kiwanis Club of Kent, Kent Station, WCP Solutions, Kent Police Employee Benevolent Association, and Kent Lions Club are sponsors. The Golden Steer is catering the event.

CISK began in 1991 as the Kent Community Council for At-Risk Children and Youth. It officially became a Communities In Schools affiliate in 2002. The organization has three site coordinators and serves 3,000 Kent and Covington students at least once a year – more than 100 of those students are mentored one-on-one weekly by a member of the community.

The event is free but registration is being take online.
