The city of Kent – along with the Kent Downtown Partnership, Kent Station, Republic Services and the Lions Club – invite the community to Team Up 2 Clean Up Kent on Saturday, May 13, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Residents, neighborhood and faith-based organizations, civic groups, schools, youth organizations, businesses and families are encouraged to get involved in the citywide litter cleanup event

Volunteers can pick up free gloves and trash bags and get directions to “hot spots” – areas that need the most attention – by meeting at 8 a.m. at one of two locations:

• Kherson Park, 307 W. Gowe St. (downtown)

• Golden Steer Steak & Rib House, 23826 104th Ave. SE (East Hill)

Trash bags can also be dropped off at the same locations that day until noon.

According to city conservation specialist Gina Hungerford, this year’s effort is going to be even bigger and better than in years past.

“Even more of Kent’s organizations are joining forces to create awareness and make a larger impact. With check-in and drop-off locations on the East Hill and downtown, we hope this encourages participation and makes getting involved in cleaning up Kent more convenient,” Hungerford said.

There will be drawings and prizes awarded to participants who collect a ticket for every bag of litter they drop off, adding an element of fun to an otherwise dirty job. Kent Station and Republic Services are donating prizes.

“We hope to get a great turnout at this year’s litter clean up,” said Mayor Suzette Cooke. “Historically, several community organizations have held individual events. By working together, we can make a visible difference across the entire city.”

Individuals and groups interested in participating must register by 5 p.m., Friday, May 12 at KentWA.gov/TalkingTrash.

For additional information, contact Hungerford at ghungerford@KentWA.gov or 253-856-5549.
