Lottery winner David Hopkins of Des Moines poses Dec. 13 with his giant check

Boeing employee and regular Lottery player David Hopkins said he is still in shock about his $280,000 Hit 5 win, which he won Dec. 13 at a Des Moines grocery store.

“I put the ticket in the bar code reader and had to check several times to read what it said,” he said. “At first I thought it was $280, then $2,800, and finally realized how many zeros there were.”

When asked what he plans to do with the money, Hopkins said it will help his wife retire next month. “My wife and her brother take care of their 90-year-old mother at home. This money will make it easier for her to retire and spend more time with her mom.”

Hopkins tried to call his wife several times this morning after he found out he won, but hadn’t been able to reach her before claiming his prize. “I know what she’ll say. She’ll think I’m joking, for sure,” he said.

The largest amount Hopkins won prior to his big win was $1,000 playing Quinto.

“It was an accident when I bought that ticket,” he said. “I went into a gas station, and a man was upset with a clerk because she accidentally printed a Quinto ticket with his other Lottery tickets. I said I’d buy it to get him out of the store and luckily won $1,000 because of it.”

Hopkins said he hasn’t decided what else he and his wife will do with their $280,000. He’s planning on talking with her about charitable donations just as soon as he reaches her.

Hopkins purchased the ticket at QFC on Marine View Drive in Des Moines. The store will receive a retail selling bonus of $2,800.

The state’s Lottery offers consumers several types of games: Mega Millions, Powerball, Lotto, Hit 5, Match 4, The Daily Game, Daily Keno and Scratch. For more information, visit www.walottery.com.
