‘Drivers going too fast’ led to 45-vehicle collision in Kent on I-5

State Patrol says drivers need to ‘slow down;’ nobody seriously injured in Sunday afternoon incident

Drivers going too fast led to a 45-vehicle collision along southbound Interstate 5 on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 27 in Kent, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The collisions occurred at about 1:40 p.m. between State Route 516 and South 272nd Street, according to the State Patrol. There were no serious injuries.

“Please slow down!” State Patrol spokesperson Trooper Rick Johnson posted Oct. 27 on X. “These collisions were caused by drivers going too fast, not the road or weather conditions.”

The multiple collisions fully blocked the southbound lanes and traffic was diverted to State Route 516 until the lanes were cleared a couple of hours later. Traffic was backed up for at least 3 miles on the freeway and alternate routes, including Pacific Highway South, also were filled with vehicles.

Police temporarily blocked a couple of on-ramps near the collision to keep vehicles off the southbound freeway lanes.

Forty-five vehicles were involved, according to the State Patrol. The agency will investigate the incident as one collision for paperwork purposes.
