Fire damaged a Kent business early Friday morning in the 24800 block of Pacific Highway South on the West Hill.
An automatic fire alarm at 3:21 a.m. sent firefighters to the address. A Kent Police officer in the area arrived at the scene first and confirmed smoke and flames shooting from the roof, according to a Puget Sound Fire media release. The fire was at Blossom Health Care, a nursing assistant training school, in a complex at 24860 Pacific Highway S, according to fire officials. Blossom Health Care also has a location in Lakewood.
Firefighters from Puget Sound Fire and South King County Fire and Rescue fought the blaze. About 30 percent of the roof had collapsed, so crews stopped all interior fire attack and went into a defensive mode. Crews called for a second alarm to provide more firefighters in case the fire spread to two adjacent businesses.
Fire command staff instructed two ladder companies to attack the roof fire with their elevated streams of water and within minutes the fire was knocked down. That allowed crews to go back inside the structure and put out the fire.
Paramedics treated one firefighter for a minor ankle injury.
