At 8:25 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, fire department emergency units from the Kent Fire Department and South King Fire and Rescue were dispatched to reports of thick black smoke in the common hallway of a Kent Valley apartment complex. Many 911 calls were received by Valley Com Dispatch from the complex located at the 4800 block of Kent Des Moines Road reporting the heavy smoke in the hallway.

The first arriving fire department unit found thick black smoke from the building. Due to the size of the building and the number of residents a second alarm was immediately called bringing additional help. Firefighters were able to locate the fire in the kitchen of a ground floor apartment. The fire was quickly extinguished and firefighters searched for and extinguished any hot spots in the ceiling and walls. Large fans were used to clear smoke from all hallways of the large apartment building.
