A shootout at an apartment complex Sunday night in Federal Way has left five dead, one of whom was shot at by Federal Way police as they arrived.
According to initial reports, police arrived in the midst of an active shootout about 9:30 p.m. at the Pinewood Village Apartments, located near Pacific Highway and South 333rd Street.
The person shot at by police was wounded when police arrived, and as police approached, is alleged to have reached for a firearm. The police opened fire in response, although it’s unclear whether the shots fired by police or others were responsible for the man’s death.
Two other men were found dead in the apartment complex’s parking lot. A third was found dead in an apartment in the complex, and a woman was also found dead in a search of the complex. Police are unsure of whether the woman was actively involved in the incident, or may have been an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
According to the Federal Way Police Department, eight officers fired their guns during the melee. As is standard procedure, those officers have been placed on administrative leave. Police believed all involved were found at the scene, and that there is no continued threat to public safety.
A press conference is scheduled for later today.
“I will work with law enforcement to help provide any assistance they may need to keep our community safe,” said Congressman Adam Smith (D-District 9) in a statement.
