Round five of weekend lane closures from Kent to Tukwila along northbound Interstate 5 continues July 14-17.
Lane reductions will start at 8 p.m. Friday, July 14. Crews will reduce northbound I-5 to two lanes between State Route 516 and South 170th Street. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, July 17.
From 8 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Saturday, the SR 516 and Military Road on-ramps and the South 188th Street off-ramp will be closed. From 12:01 a.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday, the Military Road on-ramp and the South 188th Street on- and off-ramps will be closed.
The work is part of a rehabilitation project between South 260th Street and the Duwamish River Bridge.
Last weekend, drivers again faced delays, but the backups were a little shorter than the first three weekends, according to the state Department of Transportation. The biggest were on Saturday afternoon, with backups extending about 4 miles and added about 30 minutes of travel time. Sunday afternoon the backups were 1.5 to 2 miles, adding about 20 minutes. SR 167 had some congestion, particularly on Saturday, that created some minor delays.
Because of some major events in the Seattle area the last two weekends of July and the first weekend in August, no work on this section of northbound I-5 is planned again until the weekend of Aug. 11-14.
Following completion of the current freeway section, crews will replace expansion joints on northbound I-5 at Interurban Avenue and the Duwamish River. This work will require four weekends with northbound I-5 reduced to two lanes. State officials are working with the contractor to schedule all of this work in late summer and early fall. The exact schedule has yet to be determined.
