Federal Way girl, 8, dies after father shoots through 3 walls | Update

Police arrest father for unlawful possession of a firearm, domestic-violence assault.

An 8-year-old girl who was unintentionally shot by her father on Sunday in Federal Way has died, police and hospital officials said on April 27.

At about 11:30 a.m. April 25, Federal Way officers responded to St. Francis Hospital where an 8-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound had been transported by a private vehicle, according to Cmdr. Kurt Schwan of Federal Way police.

Officers determined the shooting occurred at an apartment complex in the 27900 block of Pacific Highway South when the 35-year-old father of the girl had been handling a firearm in the apartment. The father discharged the gun and the bullet traveled through three walls before it struck the girl in another room.

Police arrested the father, who was at the hospital with the girl. He was booked into King County Jail in the early morning hours of April 26 on charges of domestic-violence assault and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The girl was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in critical condition on April 25.

On April 27, Schwan and a spokesperson for Harborview Medical Center confirmed the girl has died, but could not confirm the date of her death.
