The Kent Black Action Commission (KBAC) presents the third annual Juneteenth celebration, “Launching a Legacy,” on Saturday, June 21 at the Morrill Meadows Park, 10600 SE 248th St, Kent.

The community-wide outreach program – featuring processions, information, vendors, food, entertainment and guest speakers – commemorates African-American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement.

The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., is free and open to the public.

The program, designed to engage the community, is an opportunity to share African-American culture and history, said Gwen Allen-Carston, KBAC executive director.

“It’s one big call for unity,” she said. “This is another invitation to show, not just to ourselves, but to many others that we are here. We might not have grounds overflowing with numbers, but we are a group that’s ignited by commitment and action.”

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. This year marks 151 years since the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19 as the African-American Emancipation Day has spread throughout the country, including Kent.

Juneteenth is now recognized as a state holiday or state holiday observance in 41 states. In 2003, the District of Columbia passed legislation to recognize Juneteenth as a district holiday observance. Other states, including Utah, South Dakota and Montana, have recognized Juneteenth through state legislative resolutions and gubernatorial proclamations. In Kent, Juneteenth is recognized by mayoral proclamation.

Saturday’s program includes viewpoints from various community speakers, including Rev. Jimmie James. State Sen. Joe Fain (R-Auburn) is among the guest speakers scheduled to appear.

Active voter registration and KBAC membership applications will be available

KBAC, a small organization that meets regularly and holds special events, is looking to grow in size and stature.

“It is our goal to have all segments of our community come together in celebration,” Allen-Carston said.
