Kent apartment fire displaces six families

Early Sunday, June 5 at Kent Fifth Avenue Apartments

Six families were displaced from a Kent apartment fire early Sunday morning, June 5 in the 700 block of Fifth Avenue South.

The fire was reported at about 2:24 a.m. at the Kent Fifth Avenue Apartments and firefighters could see the smoke from the fire when they left the nearby Fire Station 71, 504 W. Crow St., according to Puget Sound Fire spokesperson Pat Pawlak.

Firefighters arrived and found fire coming from the front and rear of a two-story apartment building. Additionally, firefighters were told that one person was unaccounted for and may be trapped in one of the apartments.

Firefighters requested additional resources by calling for a second alarm and immediately completed a search for the unaccounted for resident.

Turns out the resident was not home at the time of the fire, according to Puget Sound Fire.

It took firefighters approximately one hour to extinguisher the fire. One resident was injured and treated by firefighters at the scene before being transported to a local hospital. No firefighters were injured.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.

The Red Cross provided emergency assistance for the members of the six families. Valley Regional Fire Authority, South King Fire & Rescue, King County Medic One, Zone 3 Fire Cadets and the Kent Police Department also responded to this incident.
