Kent brush fire strikes along Interurban Trail near South 196th St.

Firefighters extinguish Aug. 8 fire in about two hours, 30 minutes

Firefighters battled a brush fire Thursday, Aug. 8 in Kent along the Interurban Trail near South 196th Street.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 12:52 p.m., according an Aug. 9 email from Puget Sound Fire spokesperson Pat Pawlak. Firefighters estimated the size of the brush fire to be about 50 feet by 50 feet. The trail parallels the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

To access the fire, firefighters had to park on South 196th Street and extend hose lines down the hillside and to the fire, Pawlak said. Due to the length of the hose lay, two additional engine companies and one brush truck were requested to respond.

The strong breeze coming from the north pushed the fire southward. The fire grew to a size of approximately 50 feet wide by 1,000 feet long, Pawlak said.

Firefighters were on the scene of the fire for approximately 2½ hours extinguishing the fire and numerous hotspots. Three engines, one brush truck, and one battalion chief responded bringing 12 fire department personnel to the scene. Renton Regional Fire Authority provided assistance.

The cause of the fire is unknown, Pawlak said.
