The City of Kent, the Kent Arts Commission, the Kent Downtown Partnership, Kent Station, and the Kent School District present the Kent Student Art Walk from March 11-22 to celebrate National Youth Art Month.
The 19th annual art walk displays student-made art in businesses around Kent Station and the downtown area.
“It’s always fun to see the variety,” said Mark Hendrickson, cultural programs coordinator for Kent Parks, Recreation and Community Service. “There’s a really positive fun energy.”
This year’s theme is Spring into Art. On March 15, there will be a reception at the Centennial Center Gallery on West Gowe Street from 5 to 7 p.m. From there, parents, students and community members can walk around the area looking at the art.
Skip Inman, who teaches art at Mill Creek Middle School, has participated in the art walk for the past eight years. In his curriculum, students learn various artistic techniques, like perspective or shadowing. The sign on his wall reminds his students that art is holistic and an international language.”We are learning to see, think, speak, write and create like artists,” the sign reads.
Nineteen schools from the elementary to the high school level will submit pieces of art. A flyer including a map of where the art will be displayed is available online at kentwa.gov.
