The couple protesting an eviction from a Kent apartment complex lost their fight Friday in King County Superior Court and must move within 30 days.
Princilla and Dominic Dinish didn’t know a landlord could refuse to renew an apartment lease for no reason at all and decided to fight in an effort to stay at the Bryson Square Apartments, 24006 108th Place S.E.
But King County Superior Court Commissioner Henry Judson ruled Friday in favor of the apartment manager.
“He (Judson) didn’t feel we were discriminated against,” Princilla Dinish said during a phone interview. “We have to move. We have a month to move.”
Dinish said the apartment manager displayed photos of items on their front porch and that the complex gave a 10-day notice to clean up the porch or move out. Dinish said she had photos as well of other units with items on their porch who didn’t receive any notices.
The couple battled the apartment complex after it declined to let them renew a one-year lease that ran out in July. The Kent Reporter featured their story in its Aug. 1 edition as well as online. Apartment managers didn’t give the couple a reason for not renewing the lease and no law requires a landlord to give a reason, except in Seattle which has a specific city ordinance to require a reason.
“If they can do it to us, we know they do it to other people,” Princilla Dinish said. “We’ll move but we are still going to fight.”
Bryson Square managers didn’t return a voicemail from a reporter for comment about the case. The complex is run by ConAm, which manages approximately 50,000 apartment units in more than 26 metropolitan areas across the nation.
