The Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority honors late engineer Robert Schmidt this Saturday by ceremonially moving the ribbon bearing his name to Olympia for Sunday’s Washington State Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service.
A small procession will travel from Fire Station 77, Schmidt’s home station, to Fire Station 74, where the ribbon is on display.
The procession will be made up of a fire apparatus, police vehicles for traffic control and as many as 20 bikes of the IAFF 7th District Firefighters Motorcycle Club. They are expected to leave Fire Station 77, 20717 132 Ave. SE, between noon and 12:30 pm. Once at Fire Station 74, 24611 116 Ave. SE, the motorcycle club will take possession of the ribbon and transfer it to the state capitol.
The procession may cause a short delay for anyone on the road between the fire stations. The Kent Fire Department apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause and thanks the public for its patience and understanding.
Schmidt died on April 21, 2013 from job-related cancer. He joined the Kent Fire Department RFA in 1989.
Schmidt and six other firefighters will be honored at this year’s memorial service.
The public and media are invited to join fire services from around the state on June 1 at the Washington State Capitol Rotunda. The service begins at 1 p.m.
