Technical rescue teams from several fire departments combined efforts on Friday afternoon to rescue a woman who had fallen and had been injured along a remote road along the Green River.
Firefighters from King County Fire District 47 were first dispatched at 7:47 p.m. to the 36000 block of Southeast Hudson Road, Ravensdale. The initial report was that a woman had fallen down a 60-foot embankment, and due to her injuries and the steepness of the hill, could not get back to the top.
Additional firefighters from the technical rescue teams of the Maple Valley Fire Department, the Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority, and the Valley Regional Fire Authority were requested to assist in the incident. King County Medic One and the King County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the call.
Combining skills and efforts, the firefighters were able to bring the patient up the hillside, which was near vertical in many areas. High-angle rope rescue systems were utilized due to the steep angle.
After being evaluated by King County paramedics, the patient was transported to a local hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. From the initial time of call until the patient was brought to the top was approximately one and a half hours. That time was necessary due to the remote location of the incident and the complexity of the rescue itself.
Local technical rescue teams train both individually and together for just this type of incident. The fire departments of Zone 3, which is made up of King County departments south of Seattle and Bellevue, also train for water and confined space rescue.
