While returning from another emergency call, Kent Firefighters were the first to spot a house fire in the 800 block of Central Ave. N. in Kent.

The fire was first reported at 6 p.m. by a Kent Aid Car as heavy black smoke coming from an older, two-story home converted into a plumbing business. Units from the Valley Regional Fire Authority, Tukwila Fire, Renton Fire and King County Medic One also responded.

The large response from neighboring departments was due to the high call volume in Kent at the time of the fire.

The house, which suffered approximately $200,000 in damages, was not occupied at the time of the fire. No one was injured though there was heavy fire damage throughout the second floor.

A business next door to the fire was also evacuated, but not damaged, as a precaution.

The cause of the fire was determined to be food left on a stove that overheated after the business personnel left the building, and is considered accidental.

The Kent Fire Department reminds everyone to “keep an eye on what you fry.” Never leave the kitchen when the oven or stovetop is in use. More home fires start in the kitchen than any other part of residences.
