Residents can get free health screenings for high blood pressure and diabetes from Kent firefighters during the month of February at several community sites.

The Kent Fire Department runs the program to help identify individuals who have no previous history of hypertension (also known as high blood pressure) or diabetes. People can then seek medical follow-up with their regular doctors.

Firefighters conducted 1,300 blood-pressure checks and 1,000 blood-sugar checks last year. Twenty-five percent of the blood-pressure checks and 6 percent of the blood-sugar checks discovered a potential undiagnosed medical condition.

The screenings will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on various dates at several sites.

For a complete list of health screening sites, call 253-856-4481 or go to www.ci.kent.wa.us/calendar/.
