County officials and a Kent Fire Department Investigator are working to determine what started a fire near the loading dock of the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center (620 West James St.) this evening, May 26.
The fire was first called in to 911 when officers in the building spotted smoke and flames coming from an unknown source at 9 p.m., shortly after the fire alarm system activated.
They quickly found that the seat of the fire was in or near the ducting for the large, commercial, natural gas powered clothes dryers in the laundry area.
Firefighters controlled the fire that burned the insulation surrounding the large diameter ducts. Fans were set up in several doorways to evacuate the smoke which had traveled throughout the western portion of the building.
No one was injured in the fire and none of the inmates were affected or evacuated.
