Ice-cream event runs Aug. 9
The Kent Historical Museum will invite residents for a blast from the past Aug. 9 at its sixth-annual Antique Automobile Show & Ice Cream Social.
Featuring everything old-fashioned, from a hot-dog stand to an old-time band, the event will serve as one of two annual fundraisers for the museum, which is located at 855 E. Smith St.
“It’s about taking a step back in time,” Curator Linda Wagner said. “Come listen to good old music, see the old cars, get an old-fashioned hot dog and scoop of ice cream and see this cool old house we’re in.”
Old-fashioned band “The Sundowners” will provide the entertainment, Wagner said, and area car-collecting group Golden Era Automobile Association will bring 25 cars for display around the museum grounds. The event also will include hot dogs and ice cream sundaes.
“We’ll also have face-painting, so it makes it fun for the kids, too,” Wagner said.
Tickets for the event, which lasts 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 7 and younger.
The museum also is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the house in which it keeps its history – known as the Bereiter Mansion – and Kent City Council President Debbie Raplee will lead a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the house at noon.
“This house was completed in 1908, and here we are on our 100th anniversary for that,” Wagner said, recounting the house’s history. “It was owned by Emil Bereiter, one of the Covington Lumber Company owners at the time. He also was mayor here in Kent in 1912 and 1913.”
The 3,500-square-foot home was considered one of the grandest in Kent, built with extensive interior woodwork and a grand portico.
In addition to Bereiter, past occupants of the home include the Saito family, a Japanese-American family that was interned during World War II.
The home was purchased by the City of Kent in 1997 to house the museum.
The building recently received a fresh coat of paint, restoring it to its original color, for the upcoming event.
