Kent city officials will open the Severe Weather Shelter downtown at Kent Lutheran Church Monday and Tuesday nights for the homeless because of the cold weather.
Priority for the overnight shelter is given to homeless families with children who are living on the streets or in vehicles, but the shelter also will accept single women and men.
Kent Lutheran is at 336 Second Ave. S.
Registration starts at 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. The shelter closes at 7 Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and clients must vacate the facility.
Staff from Catholic Community Services as well as volunteers from Kent Lutheran and the community will operate the shelter.
The high for Monday is predicted to be 31 degrees and the low 22, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures for Tuesday are predicted to be a high of 29 and a low of 18. The high is expected to be 34 and the low 31 on Wednesday.
