Pedestrians will have improved access along West James Street after the Kent City Council approved a $196,000 contract to Road Construction Northwest, Inc., to construct new sidewalks and pedestrian signals.
Crews from the Renton company will start work in January to widen sidewalks on both sides of the street between the Interurban Trail, the Union Pacific Railroad and the James Street Park & Ride lot.
The project is designed to improve access to the ShoWare Center, Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center and the downtown area.
Crews also will extend bicycle lanes along the north and south sides of the street between the Interurban Trail and the Union Pacific railroad.
The Washington State Public Works Board provided a 50 percent matching grant for construction.
City officials expect work to be completed by June.
