Kent Police arrested a 37-year-old man for investigation of vehicle theft after a 3-mile, high-speed car chase at about 2 a.m. Oct. 27 through the valley and up the West Hill.
Police started to pursue a speeding black pickup in the 700 block of West James Street near the Kent Events Center. The pickup reached estimated speeds of more than 100 mph before the driver rolled the vehicle on Reith Road near 42nd Avenue South, according to the police report. The driver, alone in the pickup, was not injured.
An officer saw the pickup speeding up to 75 mph along West James Street and started to follow the truck. The pickup driver turned left on Washington Street to head south and then took a right turn to travel westbound on West Meeker Street.
Police estimated the truck reached 102 mph in a 40 mph speed zone along West Meeker Street near 64th Avenue South. The pickup reached about 80 mph as it headed up Reith Road before the driver lost control and the truck flipped on its roof in the middle of the street.
The driver ran from the vehicle and managed to initially avoid a pursuing police dog. An officer tackled the man near the pickup and two other officers assisted along with the police dog.
The police dog bit an assisting officer in the leg by mistake. The dog then grabbed the pickup driver in the ribs before officers were able to handcuff the man. Neither the driver or officer sustained serious injuries from the dog.
The driver reportedly had taken the pickup without permission from the friend of a friend.
Assault
Three calls on the same day to a dispute between a couple resulted in the arrest of the wife for investigation of fourth-degree assault for reportedly throwing an iron at her husband at about 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at a home in the 24500 block of 35th Avenue South.
On the third visit to the house, the husband told officers that his wife had thrown an iron at him, according to the police report. The wife missed her husband with the iron. The iron broke when it hit a wall. The wife also reportedly dumped water on the man’s bed.
The wife told officers she threw the iron at her husband after he made a comment about their sex life. The wife said she didn’t try to hit her husband with the iron.
Police initially responded to the home when the wife called to report her husband had stolen her car.
Officers told her that issue had to be determined in civil court.
Officers returned to the home a second time when the husband called to report his wife had slashed the tires on his vehicle. Officers talked to the husband and wife but could not establish that any crime had been committed.
Malicious mischief
Police arrested a 30-year-old man for investigation of third-degree malicious mischief after he allegedly broke a television and knocked pictures off the wall during a dispute with his mother at about 3:40 a.m. Oct. 29 at a home in the 9600 block of South 248th Street.
The mother called police to report that her son had broken items during an argument, according to the police report. Officers had no information on the reason for the argument. The mother told officers her son had been drinking alcohol.
The son had left the home on foot before police arrived, but officers found the man near the home.
