Kent Police arrested a 37-year-old Kent man on Thursday night in connection with the shooting death earlier Thursday of a man who died on East Saar Street near downtown.

James C. Knowlton, 42, died from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to a King County Medical Examiner’s Office report on Friday afternoon.

The arrested man reportedly had an altercation with Knowlton that ended in a single shot fired into Knowlton’s chest that fatally wounded him. Police are not releasing any detailed information about the suspect in order to ensure the integrity of the investigation, according to the media release.

A 911 call at about 10:16 a.m. Thursday reported an unconscious man in a car, said Kent Police spokesman Jarod Kasner. Witnesses started to perform CPR on Knowlton in the street. Officers and paramedics arrived a short time later and continued CPR before Knowlton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers then saw that Knowlton had a single gunshot wound in the upper body, Kasner said.
