Incidents include vehicle prowls, carjacking arrest, police pursuits, shots fired

A sampling of Kent Police incidents Jan. 26 to Feb. 6:

Jan. 26

Vehicle prowls: At approximately 2:24 p.m., patrol responded to a report of multiple vehicle prowls at Salvation Church, 1100 Central Ave. S. Upon arrival, officers determined that four vehicles had been broken into, and a fifth vehicle showed signs of an attempted break-in. Later, on Jan. 30, three additional vehicles were reported broken into in the same area.

Jan. 27

Fiber optic cable cut: Officers responded to Meridian Middle School, 23480 120th Ave. SE, to investigate an incident involving intentionally cutting a fiber optic cable. The incident is under investigation, and surveillance footage from the school is pending review.

Jan. 28

Carjacking arrest: Officers responded to an armed carjacking on West Harrison Street in downtown. A new Flock camera at the Birch Creek Apartments entrance, 27360 129th Pl. SE, detected the car, leading to the eventual arrest of a 22-year- old woman, who was located and taken into custody without incident.

Police pursuit: At approximately 9:54 a.m., officers received information from Des Moines Police regarding a theft report involving a vehicle that Kent Police had recently contacted at 14200 SE 257th Pl. Officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, but the driver failed to yield, leading to a pursuit. During the chase, the suspect struck a patrol vehicle and attempted to attack another before eventually crashing. The suspect and an additional occupant were taken into custody without further incident.

Jan. 31

Threat with gun: Officers responded to a threat complaint on the West Hill after a reporting party stated that while driving southbound on Military Road S., the driver of another vehicle brandished a firearm. Officers located the suspect’s registered vehicle at Pembroke Apartments, 25907 27th Pl. S., and conducted a high-risk stop. The suspect was detained and found to have a Sig-Sauer P228 semi-automatic pistol in their pocket. Upon questioning, the suspect referenced being followed for several years and mentioned federal investigations. The suspect was arrested and booked.

Feb. 1

Police pursuit: An officer was involved in a short vehicle pursuit that ended inside the Signature Pointe Apartment complex, 25102 62nd Ave. S. The suspect then exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. The officer pursued the suspect and took them into custody without further incident.

Feb. 3

Gas theft: The Gonnason Boat staff was alerted to an alarm in their lot, 307 Central Ave. S. Through remote cameras, they spotted a suspect who had cut the fence and stolen gasoline. The suspect was initially not located but returned for more gas and was caught in the lot. A 47-year-old transient male was arrested.

Feb. 5

Fugitive caught: Officers assisted a deputy U.S. Marshal in apprehending a wanted fugitive on West Hill. Upon arrival, officers formed an arrest team, secured the suspect, and completed the arrest without incident. Since the deputy U.S. Marshal’s vehicle lacked a partition, officers also facilitated the transport of the suspect.

Occupied stolen vehicle: An officer located an occupied stolen vehicle at 7-Eleven on Central Avenue South. As the officer approached, the driver exited the car and fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, the officer tackled and detained the suspect. Further checks revealed that the suspect also had a $50,000 robbery warrant. The suspect was arrested and booked.

Shots fired at residence: Officers responded to 11600 block of SE 210th Pl., regarding a report of gunfire directed at a residence. The homeowners stated they had no known disputes or conflicts that would explain the incident. Two bullets entered the home, and one struck a vehicle parked in the driveway. A neighbor reported hearing gunshots and observed a male suspect fleeing on foot before entering a waiting vehicle, possibly an older Toyota Highlander, which then left the area via 116th Ave. SE.

Attempted carjacking: At approximately 3:15 p.m., a victim was confronted by an unknown male who pointed a gold handgun at the victim and demanded their vehicle. Two witnesses walking by heard the victim’s calls for help and immediately contacted 911. The suspect fled on foot, but officers conducting an area check located and detained the suspect. In-field identification was positive, and a fake gold handgun was recovered.

Feb. 6

Assault of child: Crews responded to a rapidly devolving situation involving a firearm, two adults, and children. Officers quickly established plans and emergency go teams when Valley Comm (911 dispatch) got the female to exit with the children. Officers recognized signs of strangulation on a 3- year-old child as the mother was processing the situation. In-home video footage of the assault on the child was identified.
